No. 7 — Still no backpacks at AHS

Backpacks were restricted to students at the start of the 2015 school year and are still restricted to this day in 2018. Many students past and present have been upset with this policy, citing the ability to carry illegal items in their computer bags being just as easy as a backpack. Clashing heads between a majority of the student body with administration still exists. However, Principal Paul Karelis still has no intention of changing the policy in the foreseeable future.
Administration says their reasoning is for the safety of the student body and faculty. Students previously have brought in illegal drugs, guns, paraphernalia, and other illegal contraband. With the rise of school shootings which have been happening almost every other day, the administration is just concerned for everyone’s safety. Some teachers have been subject in the past to students bringing inappropriate items to school.
The students have complained about the policy for a while now. It is very inconvenient for students and with the shockingly low passing times in between classes, there have been more tardies as a result. For example, students on third floor must walk to first floor, maybe they need to go to the bathroom, and then back to third floor for the second class in only four minutes. This is inconvenient for students. Perhaps a compromise will be made sometime in the future.
