Aitkin High School is set to get a few upgrades over the summer of 2018. The school is remodeling parts of the first and second floors. There are a few major upgrades coming to the school. One upgrade is that two bathrooms are getting remodeled. They are both on the first floor near the cafeteria and the new gym. Also, the special education classroom will be moving to the first floor where six current teachers are located. The area where special education is moving to will be remodeled to better fit their needs.
The new bathrooms feature dividers between urinals and much more space to move about. They also have full sized handicap stalls, and the stalls are all being redone as well. Both women's and men's bathrooms will be redone. In the process of expanding the bathroom, the health room will be lost to create enough space for the plans. The bathrooms near the new gym will also include a new single family room bathroom that has a diaper changing station.
The teachers that will be moved during the remodeling process are Mr. Hopperstead, Mrs. Ratz, Mr. Smith, Mr. Schwarz, Mr. Michaletz, Mr. Carlson and Mr. Mehr. These teachers will be moving to the old special education rooms, but they will be a few rooms short still. To get these rooms back; the school will downsize the library to get new classrooms. The library will then get a new entrance that leads right into the main hallway.
The school received the money to do these updates from the state. The school qualified for the money because the school is outdated. These updates will all begin once the 2017-2018 school years is over.
"I'm really looking forward to getting these upgrades done this summer and continuing to look for ways to improve the school in the future," Superintendent Mr. Brad Kelvington said.
