As winter sports come to an end, spring sports roll around the corner with new goals and outcomes expected along with changes in the program. There is a new head varsity softball coach Donavon Daiker who coached girls softball at Brainerd. Coach Daiker has had years of experience while coaching at Onamia and Brainerd. He also has experience from playing baseball in high school and college.
“With my experience in softball I would like to see a level of play and add intensity to the program,” coach Daiker said. “Also most important to me I want to make the game fun and see the number of girls playing each season increase. Most importantly I want the girls to have fun and enjoy the season.”
The varsity softball team is excited for the changes in the program and are excited to see how the changes will impact their season. Cheyenne Baumann, a senior on the varsity team, said, “I think he will impact the season with his passion for the game. He brings his ‘A’ game to every practice and truly helps us become better softball players. He pushes us to do our best at practice and when we start playing games I think it will really start to show.”
“I think he will definitely put a lot of effort into strengthening our program,” said Shelby Coombs, a senior on the varsity team. ‘“He always talks about how this year is going to be different because we are going to win, and we’re going to have fun doing it.”
The ladies’ first game is April 4 at 4:30 p.m. against Ogilvie at the Varsity field. The game will go on depending on the weather. The ladies would love to have support from the student body for this season.
