Respect, Responsibility, Character, and Pride. We hear these words everyday in the morning announcements and they are on posters in every class. But is the student body even considering the classroom PBIS?
First off, what is PBIS? PBIS is Positive Behavioral Interventions & Support. It aims to improve and integrate all of the data, systems, and practices affecting student outcomes every day. But is PBIS really doing its intended purpose in AHS? According to our principal Mrs. Lisa DeMars, “We are in the early stages of implementation and it is going to take time to see the results of implementing PBIS.”
Only time can tell if PBIS will make a difference in this school. But we can make assumptions based on the plans the school has to add and make changes to PBIS. According to Mrs. DeMars, after the PBIS coordinator left a few years ago it wasn't a priority anymore. When DeMars was hired as the new principal she met with the teachers and a common thing that kept being mentioned was re-implementing the PBIS system to improve the school culture and climate and by recognizing positive behaviors. From a student survey taken last fall we also know the students of AHS want there to be a way to find opportunities to build in caring about our building and each other. Based on this information, both the teachers and students believe that PBIS made a difference in this school.
PBIS is a huge factor in this school and changes are going to arrive from it and we will see that with time.
