The student-run school restaurant, The Rustic Flag, is open for business and has been serving customers since Feb. 13.
The Restaurant started with some experimentation of different dishes along with determining a main theme. They decided on “The Rustic Flag,” which is fitting given the students in the class, Restaurant teacher Mrs. Bast said.
“We have a couple of students going into the military, and they said, ‘We want to do that. We want to do something that promotes patriotism and honors our veterans and police officers.’ In the past, the restaurant has been themed ‘camo’ or ‘Up North.’ This year, they decided to split away from tradition and try something new,” Bast said.
One tradition that started last year is sure to please the seniors. Seniors at Aitkin High School will be able to order one meal from the school restaurant.
Some of the new items this year are Marlboro Onions a la mode, the Pulled Pork Lettuce Wrap With Pineapple Carrot Slaw, and the Chicken Tender Melt.
Some of the Rustic Flag staff shared their favorite items. “I would have to say, the Greek Chicken Salad,” Mrs. Bast said. “It is full of wonderful, yummy things like artichoke hearts, kalamata olives, and feta cheese, topped with our wonderful homemade Honey Lemon Dressing that makes your mouth explode with joy.”
Chef Chandra MacDonald said her favorite item is The Turkey Cranberry Croissant. “I also like an extra slice of cheese added with the marlboro onions on the side,” MacDonald said.
The restaurant is open Tuesday to Friday from 11:15 a.m.-12:30 p.m. now until May 18 in room 143. The Rustic Flag is closed on days that school is not in session.
