Gobbler wrestlers open sections with win over Royalton

The Aitkin wrestling team took down the Royalton Royals in Tuesday’s match by a score of 45-25. Tyler Bare (1:24), Chris Jackson (3:43), and Bryce Haugly (3:00) all pinned their Royalton opponents.
The match started out close with Royalton leading for the first few matches but Aitkin put the hammer down and came out with a come back and killed the competition, almost doubling Royalton’s score. “I knew I had to win because the team was depending on me,” Haugly said.
Aitkin head wrestling coach Kevin Lamke believes the team has a shot at making some waves in the section tournament. “I believe we can make it to state,” he said. “We have to beat two teams that we lost to and every one of our guys has a shot. It just depends who shows up for those matches.”
Haugly believes Aitkin wrestling will continue to be a strong program in the future. “I see it in the same place because we have a good program and supportive parents.”
The Gobblers will finish out section play in Royalton Friday, taking on Blackduck in the semifinals. If they win, they will wrestle the same night in the final.
Tyler Bare pinned his Royalton opponent in the first round of section wrestling. The Gobblers take on Blackduck tonight in the semifinals.
