This year was Kelly Bast's first year as a family and consumer science teacher here at Aitkin High School. Ms. Bast previously taught FCS in Onamia. Ms. Bast is known for teaching her classes very thoroughly, especially the cooking classes. She started out by teaching the basics of cooking and baking, everything from the chemical reactions between ingredients to how to prepare the food. In the restaurant class, students learned how to properly run a commercial kitchen. Within the restaurant students learned how to serve, prepare, and clean the kitchen, while ensuring food safety.
Ms. Bast looked back on her first year as an Aitkin Teacher and reminisced. Watching the restaurant class burn sheets of bacon to charcoal and having a student brake a sewing needle off into their thumb were two of her most memorable moments from this year. One change she would like to make in the coming years is to go towards a more culinary approach with the restauraunt class to prepare them for real careers in the food industry. Her favorite part about teaching this year was “seeing the students learn a new skill and be excited about it.”
Ms. Bast has had a great year. Some classes may have pushed her to her limits, but she never gave up and saw nothing but potential for students to improve. I wish her the best of luck while teaching in Aitkin and that she has many more great years here at AHS.
