This year, Aitkin will say goodbye to one of its favorite staff members, Julia Real. Mrs. Real started teaching art 19 years ago in North Minneapolis at an elementary school. “I realized that age group was not for me,” Real said. From there, she ended up teaching junior and senior high art classes here in Aitkin. During her time here, she has helped make Aitkin a brighter and better place, and, on top of teaching art classes, she has also directed the one act play. In her teaching, Mrs. Real strives to teach students the basic skills needed that she said nobody taught her growing up.
Mrs. Real shared the pride she feels as a teacher by saying, “My favorite thing is a student taking a skill set of mine and learning something, and watching that skill grow.” She also added that she is happy to see some of the drawings of seniors, which gives her a sense of pride.
While Mrs. Real has taught here, artwork has gone to the State Art exhibit twice, and has always represented our school wonderfully. Mrs. Real has certainly made a great impact at the students here at AHS, and will have a long-lasting legacy. When asked what she would like to see happen at AHS after she leaves, she said, “I’d like to see the program continue to be respected as helping right-brain development, and to keep the fine arts program strong.”
She also had a few words for fellow staff members at AHS, adding, “I would like to thank the staff for helping me to raise my son, Franklin 'Sweet Pea' Real." Mrs. Real will always remain in the minds of all of her students as one of their favorite teachers, always opening our minds and helping to make us into more intelligent, well-rounded individuals. From everyone here at Aitkin High School, It’s been Real.
