This year’s tennis team is off to a good start. They had their first match on Tuesday, April 7 where they defeated Big Lake 6-1. After their win against Big Lake, the team lost 5-2 to St. Cloud Cathedral on April 9. Winning matches for the Gobblers were the doubles teams of Franklin Real-Jacob Hagestuen and Jakob Arnold-Jaren Johnson. The boys took sixth in their tournament in Pine City on April 11th. Jaren Johnson and Nathan Davies-Nathan Hagestuen placed fourth. Franklin Real-Jacob Hagestuen and Jakob Arnold-David Curtiss were consolation champions. After that, the team fell to Duluth Marshall 6-1 on April 13. Winning for Aitkin was the duo of Jakob Arnold and Jaren Johnson. The boys then fell to Virginia on April 14th by a score of 6-1. Winning for Aitkin was Captain Bryce Haugly. The next home match will be Thursday, April 16th at 4:30 pm against Mora.
The captains of this year’s team are Bryce Haugly, Brett Harris, and Franklin Real. They are coached by Jen Waldorf, Lindsay Kaiser, and Chris Carlberg. After losing six seniors from last season to this season, the boys now have a much younger team, but they still have high hopes for the season, according to Haugly.
Harris said, “We practiced a lot in the off season and I think we are improving every day. We are a very young team but we are going to give it our all every single time.” Despite being a young team, the boys have a good attitude and are looking to do well this season.
