Marie Zettel, a four-year teacher at Aitkin High School, has been selected as teacher of the week. Ms. Zettel teaches chemistry, college chemistry, basic chemistry, and ninth grade science at AHS. Zettel attended high school at White Bear Lake Area High School and went to college at St. Benedicts College, which is near St. Cloud. Before Ms. Zettel taught at Aitkin, she taught for one year in Mahtomedi and one year in Bagley.
Zettel decided to become a science teacher because she liked science as well as the science teachers she had in high school. She says, “Teaching is a lot of work; sometimes people are rude, but in the end it’s worth it. I like watching people learn, seeing them grow, and being able to make a difference in people’s lives.”
Student Rachel Curtiss said, “Ms. Zettel is funny. She makes it fun to be in her class and enjoyable to learn what she’s teaching. She is also very patient with everyone. She does whatever it takes to make sure her students learn what they need to. She is also always willing to let students come in at any time to try to help them the best she can.”
Zettel says her strengths are: Working with kids, especially in small groups, being funny, and very well organized. In her free time Ms. Zettel enjoys reading, swimming, crocheting, computer games, and puzzles. She spends much of her free time with her fiance, Adam. They spend lots of time at St. James Catholic Church where they volunteer and attend services. They also enjoy camping and spending time outdoors. She says she likes living in a small town, and says this of Aitkin, “I like living here because everyone is so nice and friendly. I can walk down the street and have people honk at me and say hello!”
