Seniors learn from local businesses
Aitkin High School seniors had the opportunity to hear from area businesses and ask them questions as part of their career exploration unit February 21.
Tim Anderson, Regional Branch Manager of Members Cooperative Credit Union and Mark Larson, an Agent at Security State Insurance along with Jeremy Janzen, an Associate Broker at Cummings Janzen Real Estate all spoke to AHS seniors about their work.
“All three of the professions are vital to life in the future and most of us will be meeting with all three of those guys for our own lives,” senior Jon Blanchette said.
Carter Kjelstrom was amazed at the number of different banking jobs Anderson spoke about. “Over the list of jobs he showed us that go on at the bank I was really surprised that there was enough room for all the people to work there,” Kjelstrom said.
Ava DoRan thought that she would like some of the careers more than others. “Real Estate was the most interesting and it was a career I could see myself doing,” she said. “It’s very high risk, you never know if you’ll have income that month or for a few months, but it seems like an interesting and fun career – you get to meet tons of new people.”
Working on commission was an interesting and daunting idea for many students. “Selling the houses is the only way you make money in real estate or your checks are nothing,” Valerie Sullivan said. “It’s scary!”
“I am glad we got to listen to these people talk,” Joe Cummings said. “As a son of a man who is in the insurance field, I surprisingly didn’t know much about selling insurance until Friday. I did learn a lot and it really opened my eyes to opportunities I didn’t even know I had.”
