DZ Hampsters

Many of you may have seen Ms. Del Zoppo (DZ) standing in the hall between classes petting a little ball of white fur and thought, “What is she holding?” It is one of her two hamsters, or as DZ refers to them, “hammies,” Penelope Newton or Beatrice Kepler. These two hamsters hold a very special place in DZ’s heart and the hearts of her students. They live in her classroom in two separate cages. They do not get along all of the time and require their own space.
Penelope is 8 months old. She is a Roborovski hamster. She likes to nip but she is sweet. She likes to have her own personal space and enjoys climbing her cage. Beatrice is 5 months old. She is a Djungarian hamster. She is really gentle and DZ describes her as a “roly-poly.” She enjoys eating and bothering Penelope. Beatrice is twice the size of Penelope even though Penelope is older. Both hamsters enjoy rolling around the classroom in their hamster balls and occasionally visiting Zettel next door. DZ bought two hamsters so they could keep each other company but they usually fight when put together. They are working on their relationship and are getting more tolerant of each other.
Beatrice had a mishap a couple of weeks ago when she swan dove out of DZ’s hand and landed on the countertop. She was a little bloody and stunned from the event. She now, however, is back to her old food-loving self. You can visit these furry little balls of fun in DZ’s room on third floor.
