Have you ever wondered what standards scholarship organizations expect from their applicants? Dollars for Scholars has taken the time to give us the information everyone wants to know and to knock out any myths that have been created over the years.
Dollars for Scholars was started in 1991 and has over a quarter million in their bank to keep giving to graduates of the Aitkin area. Last year they handed out sixtyseven scholarships, which tally up to over $60,000 dollars to seniors.
So, what makes your mark when filling out applications for different scholarships? GPA, current grades, work history, and how much time you put into your community, whether it be school sports and activities or activities that aren’t funded by the high school are all taken into account. “We always look for the well rounded individuals to receive our larger scholarships,” said Steve Bare. Basically an application is an updated and well-formed documentation of yourself.
“Everybody who fills out the application completely and puts in the time and effort to make their application clean and nice will win a scholarship from our organization,” said Geni Patrick who is part of the Dollars for Scholars organization.
This year Dollars for Scholars is switching their application from paper to online. This way you will be able to build your own profile and increase your chances for national scholarships. Geni will be meeting with the seniors during 4B lunch period on March 23 and 24. Dollars for Scholars also have a new renewable $10,000 scholarship for students who have completed their first year of college. Scholarships will be handed out on May fourth at the senior reception.
A mandatory Dollars for Scholars meeting has been scheduled March 23 for last names starting with the letters A-K and March 24 for last names starting with L-Z during Period 4B in the media center.
