The halls of Aitkin High school are bustling as students scurry to their classes, in hopes to make it before the bell rings. The class starts, and as soon as an assignment is given, headphones are in. Students use music for a variety of reasons, such as tuning out others, concentrating on work, and using it as a way to calm anxiety. But what are the students of Aitkin high school actually listening too?
In a schoolwide survey asking a few questions about music taste and genre choices, almost 120 students responded and the feedback leads to country and rap music being the top influences in the high school.
Ariana Grande and Juice WRLD were ranked by students as the hottest artists of the year (so far). Some other frequently voted artists were Post Malone, Billie Eilish, and Ryan Upchurch. One of the new “upcoming” artists mentioned was the Jonas Brothers, who are making a return to music this year.
One question asked was if we could incorporate more music in the school days. One student in the anonymous survey replied,” We should have songs instead of bells.” Another student wrote, “I think teachers could play music during work time. The majority of teachers allow earbuds anyways.” However, others didn’t like the idea of listening to music they might not like. “People have way different music tastes so there would be too much conflict,” wrote a student.
A lot of students did point out that being attentive and participating in class is important, and being able to use headphones is a privilege. Some highlighted that headphones can be a problem for some students who have trouble concentrating, or students who ignore others because of them.
