This week’s athlete of the week is Brooke Miller. Brooke has had an amazing basketball season for the Aitkin Gobblers. Brooke said that she is very dedicated to her team and that she would help any player out if they needed help. Her hope for the season was to go 17-4, beating Crosby and Hinckley. Her best game was against Rush City when she scored over 20 points. Brooke is averaging just under 10 points a game.
Before a game Brooke prepares herself by sitting in the locker room with her teammates getting “pumped up.” Physically, Brooke has gotten where she is today by weight lifting, doing cardio, going to open gyms, and working on ball handling. She has been playing basketball since she was little, for almost seven years. Even though Brooke is doing so well, she stated that she can not dunk on a seven foot rim.
If Brooke could meet one famous basketball player it would be Minnesota Lynx player Maya Moore because she idolizes her. Other than Maya Moore, Brooke idolizes her coach, Mr. Williams. Brooke said, ” He has helped me to become a great player and an excellent leader to others.”
Coach Williams says that what makes Brooke a great captain and role model is her enthusiasm for the game and her team. “She loves the game almost as much as she loves being around her teammates,” he said. “Brooke has put in a lot of extra time both in the weight room and the gym during the off-season. She was a regular in the weightroom and also played AAU basketball for the Comets out of St. Cloud last spring. Brooke is able to help lead this team both with her play on the floor and all the little things she does for the girls off of the floor as well. I am very proud of Brooke and what she has accomplished to this point in our program, and I am very excited to see what the rest of this season and her senior year have in store for her and her team!”
After high school Brooke would like to go to Bemidji State University for sports medicine or physical therapy. When she is there she hopes to continue playing basketball.
