Aitkin High School seniors toured Aitkin Iron Works Inc. Jan. 10 as part of their career exploration unit. Students were able to observe many different types of lathes and machining centers as well as ask questions of John Buisman and Dylan Wilson, both of whom led the tours.
“It was a very interesting look into what they do, and if someone was interested in a job in manufacturing or was not sure what they want to do, it would have been very useful,” senior Alaina Chute said.
Senior Gabby Murray added, “During the tour of Aitkin Iron Works I learned many things and a lot of my questions were answered.”
Some students were surprised at the work Aitkin Iron Works does.
“The most interesting thing I saw at the Iron Works was the roller that they make for a rolling truck that flattens the road surface and makes it smooth,” senior Kyle Cluff said. “It was very surprising to hear that they make so many parts for some pretty big and well-known companies.”
Some students were interested in the types of jobs Aitkin Iron Works offers while others have other plans. Still, students found the trip beneficial.
“I love the idea of working with my hands and always moving around the day to work,” senior Gabe Long said. “I believe that the field trip was very useful and would love visiting more jobs to expand my interests.”
