What is Magic the Gathering?

In the year 1993, an up-and-coming game designer, Dr. Richard Garfield, paired with game publisher Wizards of the Coast and together they released the first Magic the Gathering cards which paved the way for thousands to follow. Magic the Gathering is a simple card game that has recently exploded here at Aitkin High School. It has exploded so much that a club formed around it. The club accepts everyone from the experienced pro players to the people that are just interested and want to learn how to play.
I built the Magic Club initially because I needed a civics project. When I first brought it up to the civics teacher, Mr. Miller, I was sure the MTG club would fail, mainly because I was going to be the one running it and I’m not the most talented or organized of people. When the first meeting took place I was so nervous that no one would show up but to my surprise, 16 people showed up to play Magic the Gathering. After the first meeting, many of them started to show up daily. It was then that I decided I needed to make a spot in the school that revolved around the game. This spot needed to accept everyone no matter the skill, it needed to build skills and strategies, and lastly, it needed to be a place that Magic the Gathering players could go to have some fun.
When club member Nathan Hagestuen was asked why he joined his response was, “Because I love Magic,” and Nathan enjoys the game since he’s started playing it. “It’s also a good way to meet people,” added Nathan. Nathan has been playing for about a year and a half now and says that the coolest thing about Magic club is that it’s just something to do. Though it’s not all perfect because Nathan dislikes how much of his time nowadays involves Magic the Gathering.
So if you are thinking about joining Magic club stop by room 314 on a Friday. I’m sure there will be someone there that can give you information, whether it’s from the Club’s supervisor Mr. Henke or one of the Club seniors that frequent the room almost every day. Magic Club accepts everybody from casual to competitive players. So please stop by and check it out! Maybe you’ll learn a thing or two that piques your interest in the game.
